Hey Cade —
Here's the picture of what you're building this season.
You're strong, you're tough, and you'll battle anybody. That's real, and toughness is the thing a coach can't put in you — you've already got it. So let's be clear about what this season is actually about: it's not your strength or your grit. Those are good. It's the technique and the mindset that turn a strong kid into a wrestler who can score from anywhere — setting up your shots, getting off the bottom, and wrestling a hard third period.
- You're genuinely strong and athletic. The tools that let you hang with anyone are already there.
- You're tough. You'll get in a battle and you won't back down. That's the part most kids never develop.
- You're coachable — you'll grind through the boring technical reps, which is why the setups are starting to work.
- Your shots are landing now on kids who used to stuff them, because you're setting them up instead of shooting cold.
One thing to focus on this week
Set up every shot. You've got a good double-leg — the problem was never the shot, it was that you'd fire it cold, and a kid who's wrestled you knows it's coming and just sprawls. Hand-fight first. Snap his head. Fake a shot to make him react. Then shoot the same double, into the hole the setup opened. And if he does stuff it, don't stop — come right back with a second attack. You don't need a new move. You need to hide the one you've got. A set-up shot scores; a naked shot gets sprawled on.
The stance and motion, the hand-fighting, the stand-ups, the grind rounds — none of it is glamorous, and the conditioning is miserable. It doesn't feel like it's adding up. It is. The wrestler who's scoring from everywhere and winning the third period next season is the one who did the boring technical work this year. You already have the strength and the toughness. This season is about the wrestling. Keep going.
