Malik's Mental Game — Fast Is Loose

Malik is competitive and coachable — real strengths. The work is on the one thing that costs him: pressing when it matters, which tenses him up and actually makes him slower.

What he already does well

He wants to win and he'll do the work — that competitiveness is the engine of everything, and it's why the form drills got done. The goal isn't to add drive; it's to keep the drive from turning into pressing, because in sprinting, trying harder the wrong way makes you slower.

The one that matters: relax to go faster

This is the most counterintuitive thing in his sport. When Malik wants to run faster, he presses — clenches his fists, tightens his face, strains — and tension slows him down. Give the fix a name:

Coaching Cue

The cue: "Fast is loose." At top speed, soft hands, soft face, dropped shoulders. The fastest sprinters look almost lazy because they're completely relaxed, letting the speed happen. Relaxing isn't slowing down — it's how he goes faster.

Practice it in build-ups — run fast while consciously relaxing — so it's automatic in a race.

The reset: next one, loose

A sprint is over in seconds, and there's always another race:

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Next one, loose." A bad race is done the instant it's over. Pressing to make up for it in the next one just tenses him up and makes it worse. The way to bounce back is to loosen up, not try harder.

Before a big race

Nerves aren't the enemy — but for a sprinter, they turn into tension, which is. Reframe them: "this is the fun part," and breathe them out. A short, familiar warmup makes a big final feel like an ordinary rep. Loose is fast.

What you can do

The biggest lever is you — a calm, positive presence, and no mechanics thoughts at the line. On the drive home, let him lead — "I loved watching you run" does more than any breakdown of the race, and it keeps the whole thing light, which is exactly how a sprinter runs fast.

None of this is about making him care more — he competes plenty. It's about keeping the compete from turning into tension, because for him, relaxed is the fastest he'll ever be.
