Ava’s Athlete Card

Ava is a 12-year-old travel fastpitch pitcher for the Riverside Fury with a real gift: she throws hard, harder than most kids her age, and she's fearless in the circle. The gap this season has been command — turning that velocity into strikes and outs instead of deep counts and walks. When she fell behind, she'd try to throw harder and lose the zone entirely; her changeup tipped because her arm slowed down; and after a walk or an error, her whole demeanor in the circle would sink and the inning would snowball. The spring's work went straight at those three, and it's turning a thrower into a pitcher.

Ava is working to become a pitcher, not just a thrower. Specifically: command over velocity — attacking the zone and getting ahead so she stops beating herself with walks, a changeup she throws with the exact same arm speed as her fastball so hitters can't sit on the heat, and a reset in the circle so a walk or an error doesn't drag her whole demeanor — and the inning — down with it. The arm is already there; this season is about controlling it.
