Cole’s family Update

Cole is a ball-striker first — a 12-year-old with a repeating, well-timed golf swing and iron contact that turns heads on the range. Playing a regional junior tour and summer league out of Cedar Creek, he's the kid whose warmup makes other parents ask who his coach is. The talent in the actual striking of the ball is real, and it's ahead of his age.

Here's the honest thing about this season: for a long time, Cole's scores didn't tell the truth about how well he was hitting it. A typical card had a stretch of clean golf wrecked by two or three big numbers — a wedge from 80 yards that came up 15 short, a driver that blocked right into trouble on a tight hole, and then the part that did the real damage: one bad hole becoming three because he pressed to get it all back at once. So the spring's work went where the strokes actually were. He built a three-length "clock" system for his wedges so 50, 75, and 100 yards became known numbers instead of guesses. He worked the driver's block-right back to its cause — standing up through impact — and got a safe 3-wood to find the fairway when a hole demanded it. And the biggest one, the one that isn't mechanical at all: learning that after a bad hole, a bogey is a fine score and a double is the one to avoid.

In July it came together — a 78, his first time breaking 80, and notably the first round of the season with zero doubles. He didn't hit it better than he had in May; he stopped compounding his mistakes. That's the whole difference, and it's the thing that will keep dropping his scores. His goals from here are specific: tighten the wedge distances even further, trust the driver fix under tournament pressure, and make the reset-after-a-bad-hole automatic. A September event is circled. Anyone who's watched him swing already knows the ball-striking is there. This summer was about turning that swing into a score.
