The read
Eli is an 11-year-old travel-ball shortstop for the Riverside Titans with real athleticism — the range, the arm, and the flair to make the play that ends up on everyone's phone. The gap this season has been the routine: the plays that don't make the highlight reel are the ones that decide games, and that's where he'd been leaking value. At the plate he was a dead-pull hitter pitchers learned to beat away; in the field he rushed the easy grounders and threw before his feet were set; and a bad at-bat had a way of following him out onto defense. The spring's work went straight at the routine — a two-strike approach, cleaner footwork, and a reset between pitches — and it's showing.
Goals
Eli is working to make the routine play routine — the boring stuff that actually wins games. Specifically: a two-strike approach that lets him go the other way instead of chasing the pitch up and away, fielding footwork that gets him behind the ball and set before he throws so the easy grounder stops becoming an error, and a between-pitches reset so a bad at-bat doesn't follow him into the field. The flair is already there; this season is about the plays that don't make the highlight reel.
