Mateo’s Athlete Card

Mateo is an 11-year-old competitive club midfielder for Rapids FC with two things you can't coach: a genuine engine and a great first touch. He'll cover every blade of grass and his feet are clean in tight spaces. The gap this season has been end product — turning all that work and touch into assists and control of the game. His weak left foot let defenders show him one way, his head stayed down so he was always a beat late on the decision, and his focus drifted when his team didn't have the ball. The spring's work went straight at those three, and it's showing: he's starting to receive on the half-turn and play forward instead of square.

Mateo is working to turn his work rate and touch into end product. Specifically: building a left foot defenders have to respect so he stops getting shown one way, making scanning-before-he-receives ("check your shoulder") an automatic habit so he plays a beat earlier, and holding his shape and awareness off the ball so he's still in the game when possession flips. Underneath it all he's learning to let a giveaway go and get back into the next play, instead of chasing the mistake.
