Nolan’s letter

A real one, built for one hockey kid from everything the parent had shared. Nothing here is demo copy.

Letter to Nolan

Hey Nolan —

Here's the picture of what you're building this season.

You can skate and you can handle the puck better than almost anyone your age. That's real, and it's the hardest part of hockey to build — you already have it. So let's be clear about what this season is actually about: it's not your skating or your hands. Those are good. It's turning all that skill into the thing that decides games — goals — through a quicker shot, better ice, and staying dangerous when you don't have the puck.

What you're doing well

  • Your skating is genuinely special. The edges, the burst — that's the thing you can't coach, and you've got it.
  • Your hands are soft. You can make plays in tight that most kids can't. That's a real weapon.
  • You compete and you want to get better. You'll do the boring reps, which is why the shooting work is starting to click.
  • Your release is getting quicker, and you can already see it — pucks are getting past goalies who used to be set and ready.

One thing to focus on this week

Get your shot off quicker. You've got a good, hard shot — but right now you wind up and load it, and that gives the goalie all the time he needs to get square and be set. A quick shot beats a hard one every single time, because it's gone before he's ready. Catch it and shoot it in one motion, hide it in your skating, don't telegraph it. The goalie can't stop what he doesn't have time to see. That one change turns your shot from a save into a goal.

Keep going

The garage reps — the catch-and-release, the shooting from the middle, moving your feet after you pass — none of it is glamorous. It doesn't feel like it's adding up. It is. The player who's scoring next season is the one who did the quiet shooting reps this year. You already have the skating and the hands. This season is about the parts that put the puck in the net. Keep going.
